Stress Management

Sometimes you find yourself staring at a random piece of paper and think to yourself, “It would look so much prettier shredded.”

Chances are: that isn’t a random piece of paper but your homework assignment – or some extracurricular activity you signed up for impulsively because you were naive and thought you could finish that on top of your academic workload. And chances are: no, sweetheart, you can’t shred that.

(Freddy Krueger’s modus operandi might just be a demonstration of impractical stress relief, now that you think about it: that lucky nutcase.)

It’s difficult to be happy when you are constantly bounded by an intangible sense of anxiety that your work is never going to be finished. You turn your gaze elsewhere, and you see other people completing things and being productive, and you get all cranky because really, how dare they have their lives together when you don’t.

This is about the moment you grab a McDonald’s paper bag and begin wheezing into it because heaven knows how you are going to survive the semester, especially with finals looming around the corner. You are torn between watching your newest drama addiction and ripping your hair out because the mountain of things you have to do is snowballing and drama-watching should be the last of your priorities. Is this horror ever going to end?

Yes, it’s possible even without a Time-Turner, though it would certainly be helpful.

The first step is to expel the excess stress you have. There’s a reason why we say ‘stress out’ instead of ‘stress in’; you do not internalise your stress like taxes internalise negative externalities.

Need an outlet to vent your violent, pent-up frustration? Get a stress ball and squeeze the heck out of that thing – personally, the cuter those things are, the better. The psychological theory behind cute aggression is not just plain nonsense; it has truth in it and can help in expelling the tension accumulated in your body. Even the Toysmith Squawking Chicken can do the job, especially with their annoyingly loud, high-pitched screeches. The sounds of agony that it releases will probably do a good job of substituting your personal need to scream shrilly, though I would advise against doing that in the hall. You will probably get kicked out for noise pollution – we all know how soundproof our walls are. (They aren’t, just for clarification purposes.)

Music is also great for relieving stress. Of course, you don’t start blasting EDM music at 3 am in the morning just because you need a form of stress relief (You go to Zouk for that). While music preferences are entirely subjective and some of our tastes can be occasionally questionable, for the majority, the soft lull of classical music can really help soothe our very tired souls.

Even if you are not a sporty person, doing some physical exercises can help in relieving the swelling balloon of frustration you have lodged in your chest. You may argue that it’s a waste of time when you can probably cram like, five pages more of subject material into your head, but you can revise content you have studied even while exercising. Running on the bridge to UTown with your slippers slapping underneath your feet in a very maniac-like manner can also be an excellent form of stress relief.

As long as you don’t fall, that is.

The advantage of doing quirky, eccentric things in the middle of the night is that no one (no one awake, anyway) can judge you for what you are doing, and can significantly lower the risk of you being sent to NUH Singapore for a long overdue psychological examination.

Remember to give yourself time to relax, if you are a hardcore mugger; on the other hand, if you are a hardcore procrastinator, remember that final is not as far away as you would like to believe. Both examples can invite stress to come in massive waves. Rant to your friend, eat some good food, take a nap, or call the helpline; whichever method works for you, take it. It’s unhealthy to keep stress pent-up in you especially for prolonged periods of time.

We are only human.

Mistakes to avoid

Wrong Execution

Sometimes, even if the experiences you think could be the starting of a great personal statement, the way you’ve structured and put together your essay sends up warning flags. This is because the essay is a place to show the markers the maturity and clarity of your writing style. So please take note the type of essay you are working on!

One way to get this part wrong is to exhibit wrong style of writing , like unclear sentences or incorrectly used punctuation.
Another way to screw this up is to ignore the given instructions either for creative or careless reasons. This can show the markers that you're either someone who simply blows off the instructions or someone who can't understand how to follow them.

  • Tone-Deafness

Markers are looking for resourcefulness, the ability to be resilient, and an active and optimistic approach to life. Creative ideas and strong evidence supported arguments and not just filling the word counts with sophisticated words. Essays that fail to show these qualities are usually suffering from tone-deafness.

  • Failure to Proofread

Most people have a hard time or too lazy to check over their own work. This is why you have to get someone else to proofreads your essay. This is the one place where you can, should – and really must – or even better get a perfectionist who knows all about grammar, punctuation and has a good eye for detail.

  • Off Topic

Be clear on what is the essay about. Plan on how to write the paper then check if it answers the questions. Write off the topic make it very hard for markers to grade the work. Please take note on the module you are taking and see if it links to the lesson taught in class.

How to avoid plagiarism?

Sometimes, we refer to online references and change a few things, which again leads to plagiarism. But, there is always an opportunity to eliminate plagiarism issues. New students tend to have the temptation to copy others work and use it as their own. Hence, below are some good practices that you should adopt to avoid plagiarism issues.

  • Paraphrase - So you have found information that is perfect for your essay paper. Read it and frame it into your own words. Make sure that you do not copy more than two words in a row from the text that you gonna use. If you do use more than 2 words together, you will have to use quotation marks.

  • Cite - Citing is one of the best ways to avoid plagiarism. Follow the document referencing guidelines (i.e. APA, MLA, Chicago, etc.) used by your school. Citing is really that simple. Improper citing can constitute plagiarism.

  • Quoting - When quoting from a source, use the quote exactly the way it appears. Misquoting can cause a lot confusion. Most markers frown on “bad quotes” or quotes of 40 words or more. A good writer should be able to effectively paraphrase most material. This process might be time consuming, but the effort pays off! Quoting must be done correctly to avoid plagiarism issues.

COE in Singapore

Firstly what is COE? The COE in Singapore gives you the right to drive and own a car or bike in Singapore, for a period of 10 years. After your COE expire, you can choose to renew the COE for another 5 – 10 years by paying the premium.
There are five different categories in COEs. For the various types of vehicle, you need the matching COE for the vehicle:

  • Cat A – Cars with engine capacity of 1600 CC and below

  • Cat B – Cars with engine capacity exceeding 1600 CC

  • Cat C – Goods carrying vehicles and buses

  • Cat D – Motorcycles

  • Cat E – This is an “open category” COE, which can be used for all of the above.

The government decides on the amount of available COEs in distributed every six months for each segment from the Vehicle Quota System (VQS).

By limiting the number of COE in the market, not everyone can get one. The Singapore government used the COE open bidding system for managing the quota. With the open bidding system, buyers can bid against each other for COEs.
Most people agree that the COE scheme is not perfect. The main issue would be you can't get COE cheap. As of June 2017, the COE premium for Open category is the price of S$50,526. After gathering feedback from the public, there were many creative suggestions as to how to rectify the COE scheme to give everyone an equal chance of getting a COE. Currently, the wealthy middle class and affluent families own most of the COEs.
One of the suggestions to make COEs great again is to segmenting COE by OMV. However, this will not separate those who “collect" multiple cars as a hobby from actual car users especially if the OMV quota sufficiently small. It is no surprise that the affluent will bid $200k for a COE to match their expensive million dollar sports car.

Another suggestion is to switch the current COE system to a charge-by-usage system. The proposal for a permit for a distance usage charge is a good idea, but it would not remove the COEs price entirely. Take for an example, If more people are driving aren’t the road going to be congested and so will be the distance usage fee? This suggestion is merely just breaking down COEs price to a small portion.

The bigger issue is that how will provide current system transit into the new regime. We can’t just change the current COE system overnight, We have to consider how shifting to a "COE for a block of distance" will affect current COE vehicle owners. This will open up lots of question, and it will be hugely debated.

Conclusion, we definitely cannot abolish the COEs bidding system as it has been doing an excellent job in controlling the number of cars on Singapore road. With all factors taken into consideration, the current COE system remains an effective tool to controlling the overall vehicle population in Singapore. Our COEs system does have its fair share of disadvantages, instead of solving ownership issues; the Singapore government is focusing on building a more efficient public transport network, and other mobility options make travelling around Singapore more convenience and accessibility to the public.
